At approximately 8:45 am EST, a hijacked commercial airliner slammed into the upper floors of one of the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Less than 20 minutes later, a second hijacked commercial airliner slammed into the other tower. Within an hour there were reports of a plane crashing into the Pentagon and another plane crash outside of Pittsburg that is assumed to have been heading towards Camp David. By 12:00 pm both towers of the World Trade Center had collapsed, leaving countless innocent people dead, hundreds more wounded, and many more unaccounted for.
When will the killing end? When will people realize that we are killing our own family? When will we realize that we are killing our brothers and our sisters? What will it take for people to finally decide that there's been enough violence and that it doesn't solve anything, but rather only breeds more violence? There is only one race on this planet, and that is the human race.
The attacks that occured on the morning of September 11th, 2001 will never be forgotten. No one will ever be able to forget how a vile, disgusting group of people organized attacks that targeted not only military installations such as Camp David (site where the now worthless Middle East Peace Accord was signed) and the Pentagon, but also the purely civilian World Trade Center. How can anyone justify the assault upon a purely civilian installation such as this? There is been nothing that the US government could have POSSIBLY done within the last 50 years to deserve this kind of cruelty to be inflicted upon its innocent citizens. The only thing that even compares to this is the wartime bombing of Hiroshima and other Japanese cities with atomic bombs at the end of World War II. Wartime has its own set of rules and ethics. This isn't to say that they were justified in doing so, but it hardly compares to a peacetime bombing of a civilian target at a time where it is known that the number of civilian casualties will be devastatingly high.
This is not just a problem for the United States, but also for the world. If these cruel, heartless, cowardly individuals will carry out this sort of action in the United States, who is to say they won't do the same thing elsewhere? There are those who say that US is involved in killings around the world. They are making the fundamental mistake in assuming that the actions of the US Government accurately reflect the views of the American public. The majority of US citizens feel that the United States does not need to be involved in the affairs of other nations as much as they are. As with everything else, the actions of the governments of the world, and often their inactions also, bring suffering to the innocent citizens of the world. It is the governments who wage wars on each other, but it is the innocent people of the world that are made to suffer.
If the goal of the terrorists was to bring terror and chaos to the United States, well...they succeeded in the first part. The latter part is becoming the exact opposite case. The US has a history of pulling together in times of need, and if there was ever a time where that unity was needed, it is right now. Instead of creating chaos it is bringing communities together. People are helping out their neighbors in need. They are leaving all biases aside and helping someone in their community who desparately needs their help.
Let us honor the memories of those whose lives were cruelly taken from this world by leaving aside our prejudices, our hatred towards our fellow man. Let us not seek revenge, but rather justice. Let us use this horrific time as the chance to forget all our racial problems and come together as one. Let's take this time to remember that while we may all be different in terms of race, creed, religion or orientation, we are all human beings. It is the differences that make our country great, and it is those differences that make our country strong.
I suggest we rebuild the World Trade Center. I don't suggest this as a way of helping a city regain the tourism that will inevitably be lost, nor to help that city regain a piece of its skyline. I suggest that we rebuild as a symbol that we will NOT let terrorists or other antagonists break us. We may be hurt and injured, but we are not broken. We are stronger than this. We will overcome. We will rebuild and be like the mythical firebird....stronger and more brilliant than before. The American people will not bow to the actions of terrorists. We shall not be intimitated by the vile actions of cowards who feel the need to kill countless innocent civilians. Rebuilding the World Trade Center will send a message to all terrorists across the world that, though they may try, they cannot break the spirit of the American people. They may destroy our buildings, but they will NEVER break our spirits.
As you may know, we are running dangerously low on blood needed for emergency rooms. I encourage anyone who is able to give blood to do so, the blood you give just may help save someone's life.
